Training For Puppies- Taking The Right Steps

The key to success with teaching these little guys is to start early on: in fact, the earlier- the better. They like affection and admiration so you will find that your teachings will go a lot further if you give them praise often. These dogs like to please so they will go out of their way to work hard for you. The best thing you can do is give them lots of attention and love.

One important thing to remember when teaching these small dogs is that they do not response well to harsh criticism.  If they do something wrong, which is going to happen when working with small animals, the best response is to remain calm.  Yelling and hitting are a negative action that will undo work you have striven for.  When they fail to do something correctly the best response is to look them directly in the eye and say “no” in a normal, firm tone.  They will get the message without any further action.
Some of the most important things to be teaching a dog this age is bathroom etiquette and controlling their movements when needed.  This includes sitting and staying.  Each take some time, but if you practice patience you will be rewarded with quick learning from your animal.
Effective bathroom training needs to be done consistently.  When conducting this lesson take them out right after eating, when they have been playing, as soon as they get up and right before bed.  Have a primary door that they will use and teach them to go there each time.  Your dog will pick this connection up quickly.
An important item to remember when doing training for a Lab puppy is to give them frequent breaks.  Puppies have a short attention span and need to be taught in small intervals.   Once they are allowed to play around some they will be ready to get back to work.
